When I first entered the sex work industry—what I like to call my "baby hooker" days—I lacked direction, goals, and a clear sense of purpose. I spent a couple of years floating through the business, making money and spending it … as quickly as it came in, it went out, then I'd be right back to work with $0 in my account the next day.  just as fast. I had no idea about money and how to manage it, I hadn't created a clear identity of who I was in the industry and had no clear goals to direct me. It wasn’t long before I realised I needed to make a change.

That realisation inspired me to create this blog, where I share the lessons I’ve learnt along the way and incorporated into my business as a sex worker.

You Are Your Business

First things first: you are your business. 
You’re it baby - your name, how you dress, the service you give and prices you charge. As soon as you recognise this, you will learn to run your business effectively and efficiently so you can get the most out of your career in the industry.

Defining Your Identity

Your identity is the foundation of your business. Choose a name that suits your personality and aligns with the services you offer. Your name is crucial—it’s your brand, so make it memorable and relatable. (Check out my other post on the importance of a name for more insights.)

Next, build your image. Consider your vibe:

• Are you the approachable "girl/guy next door"?
• A high-fashion, glamorous professional?
• Bold, vibrant and adventurous?
• Quiet, shy, or irresistibly mysterious?

Choose clothing, accessories, and a personal style that reinforce this identity. Whether it’s elegant simplicity, designer couture, or playful and colourful, make sure it authentically represents you.

Most people join the industry to create a better financial situation for themselves or their families. So learn to get smart with your finances, learn about money, take a seminar or short course about finances and really learn to manage your money . Map out a plan where your starting and where you want to finish off financially.

Set Clear Goals

• Weekly, monthly, and yearly financial targets
• Paying off debt
• Saving for property, education, or starting another business

Register Your Business

• Obtain an Australian Business Number (ABN) or the equivalent in your country.

Open a Business Bank Account

• Separate your personal and business finances.

Hire a Knowledgeable Accountant

• Find a sex-worker-friendly accountant who understands the industry. They can help with taxes, budgeting, and achieving your financial goals.

Track Your Earnings

• Keep detailed records of each shift or client session. This ensures accuracy and accountability for your income.

Prioritise Self-Care

Your well-being—mental, physical, and emotional—is non-negotiable. Since you are your business, neglecting self-care means jeopardising your livelihood.

Physical Self-Care

• Schedule massages or spa days.
• Exercise regularly (walk, swim, gym).

• Practice self-awareness.
• Validate and acknowledge your feelings.

Choosing Your Workplace/Environment

Now let’s discuss what the right workplace/environment for you as a sex worker is : private, brothel, massage or online work? There are pros and cons to each one so choose which best suits you. Many workers do a mixture of online and private or brothel to diversify their income streams. Consider your goals, preferences, and self-care needs when deciding between:

Private Work: Independent work with self-set rates, advertising, and location.

Brothel Work: Structured work environment with set prices, provided clientele, and facilities.

Massage Services: Offering massage therapy, with or without additional services.

Online Work: Platforms like OnlyFans, Snapchat, or adult content websites.

Choose what aligns best with your lifestyle and aspirations.

Reflecting on Success

So let’s just say, I don’t have any days where my bank account says $0 anymore, I have paid for qualifications to fall back onto in two different fields if I was to leave tomorrow. I’ve been able to travel and see some of the world. I’ve successfully started 3 businesses one is my career in the industry so I’ve gained knowledge that I can now adapt into any other business I decide to run in the future. Most importantly I’ve had a lot of fun, heaps of crazy wild memories that I won’t ever be able to forget and if I was to leave the industry tomorrow I can happily walk away with no regrets. So have fun and get what you want out of your time in the industry that can look however you wish it to.
