“Looking back at the memories of the dance we shared under stars above…” so goes the Garth Brookes song which reminds me of the times that I personally visited the premises of the Langtrees Brothel in Kalgoorlie’s famous Hay Street red light district many moons ago to dance or whatever.

Please allow me to head over to Meta AI to remind us all of Mrs Langtree's connection to that iconic property in the Goldfields town of Kalgoorlie in WA.
“Langtrees Kalgoorlie was a historic brothel on Hay Street that operated from 1905 until its closure in 2012. It was owned by madam Mary-Anne Kenworthy from 1988, who renovated it into a themed bordello and museum that opened in 2000 before she sold the property in 2022 after putting it up for sale in 2019. The building now houses a mining companies offices & staff accommodation.

Legacy
I’m not even certain of the years that I visited the famous establishment, but it was at least three decades past I believe because you see I used to travel to the historical town often investigating mine site accidents.
The first time my mate and I had completed a week of work and hit the mighty Sylvesters Nightclub after the pubs had closed for just a few more unnecessary beers. There in the dim lights we spotted a group of about five lovely ladies who seemed out of place in the rough old town. Soon we were buying them beers, chatting and cutting a rug. In the early hours last drinks were called and our lovely recently met BFF’s invited us “back to our place” for a coffee. A short drive down Hay Street and “stop here” was the command as we pulled up outside Langtrees. And that’s what we did. We had a cup of coffee with the very pleasant working ladies, said our goodbyes in the late early hours and stumbled off to our nearby motel.
Several years later after enjoying happy hour at the famous Foundry pub with some of more adventurous insurance clients one of the rascals convinced me to attend Langtrees with him for the open day/night. We enjoyed a spa, just him and me whilst the usual activity of a working brothel went on around us including a worker and client sharing our spa with us. It was a laugh and soon we left tired from the warm waters and better for the experience.
Then there was Scotty. I reckon I was in my 30’s. After the usual overindulgence of the icy local ales in the Kalgoorlie pubs served by the lovely and infamous near nude skimpy barmaids the urge hit to seek female companionship and all paths led to Langtrees. There I met the famous Madam Leigh Beswick Varis and was introduced to a beautiful blonde, may I say “older” woman who told me her name was Scotty. Thereafter I experienced a memorable hour of her time paid for with my money. Scotty talked, she hugged and surprisingly to me she kissed. I was blown away at the pleasure of it all and slept well for what was left of the night thinking kindly about her on the 600-kilometre journey back to Perth.
Later that week I happened to read one of those monthly mags that existed in those pre internet times and there she was. “Australia’s oldest working girl” was the headline. 52 years old was the quote. That surprised me as she had about 20 years on me. Scotty was not a classic MILF as such. She was just a lovely older woman, and I was the better for having met her.
So, there you have it. Those are my personal memories of Langtrees Kalgoorlie, well worth remembering. Do you have any to share?

“Langtrees Kalgoorlie was iconic and Langtrees was revered in Kalgoorlie. There was a time further back when sex workers couldn't drink in Kalgoorlie bars and had to travel 40km to Broad Arrow to go to the pub. I had dinner at 181 when it was a tapas restaurant a few times, amazing food with all kinds of memorabilia of the brothel that made dining there so much fun, there were thank you notes around the mirror in the ladies toilets! It's a shame that Langtrees closed up there however there are many people with great stories like this one and very happy memories!”
“Thanks for sharing these stories—what a unique perspective on Langtrees’ history. I really enjoyed the way you highlighted the personal connections and experiences that made it memorable. It’s clear that the people you met left a lasting impression and helped bring the place to life.”
“I would have loved the opportunity to work at the iconic Langtrees VIP in Kalgoorlie, but unfortunately it was before my time. I can only imagine the stories those walls could tell. From the working girls and the clients. It’s truly sad that the market declined due to the rise of cheap parlour shops and the short-term turnover FIFO rosters.”
“What an incredible slice of Kalgoorlie history both the place itself and your memories of it. Langtrees 181 clearly wasn’t just a building, but a whole era wrapped in red dust charm, larger than life personalities, and the unique culture of the Goldfields. Your stories really capture that mix of toughness, humour, and unexpected kindness that the town is known for. It’s fascinating to hear how the industry evolved over the decades, from the heyday of Hay Street through to the impact of FIFO and the rise of massage shops. And the way you wrote about the people you met, especially Scotty, shows how much humanity existed behind the neon signs and notoriety. Encounters like that have a way of sticking with you long after the road trip home. Places like Langtrees become part of the town’s folklore, and posts like yours keep that history alive. Thanks for sharing such vivid memories it’s a reminder of just how many stories those old walls must’ve held.”
“I had the privilege of knowing an old friend of Mary-Anne's who invited me to stay at Langtrees Kalgoorlie while she was helping with tours of the brothel. If memory serves me correctly it would have been somewhere around 2011. Langtrees was still in operation, and the individual decor of the rooms was fascinating. My bed was the back of a ute. I believe it was called The Holden On Room for obvious reasons. A truly unforgettable experience.”
“So interesting, I really appreciated this post as it shows what was and what now is, how places can easily change from how they were then and now. ”
“Reading through this trying to picture what it would have been like back then .Meet a few clients in Perth with their fond memories of Kalgoorlie. Interesting how times change and how the owners move with the times look at us now on a blog page on Langtrees new website created by Mary-Anne nothing like this would have been even imaginable back in those times . Thanks for the read on an iconic part of the industry, this place was one of the pillars that built where Langtrees is today . ”
“It's a shame that it couldn't compete with the Asian massage shops, as it feels like a true piece of Australian history was lost. If only the walls could talk, as I bet they would have some cracker stories to tell. ”
“I went to langtrees Kalgoorlie when I stated driving trucks 43 yrs ago . That's when it was the stalls . I picked a English lady with amazing big breasts . You would go inside strip off and get the privates washed with the warm water and soap . Some wouldn't get past that bit ? i would always walk past whenever I was in Kalgoorlie. ”
“Wow, this was such a cool read — I love hearing the history behind Langtrees and how it all started in Kalgoorlie. So many customers have talked to me about the old Kalgoorlie days and all the wild stories that came out of that era. Reading your memories really brings those stories to life. It’s crazy to think how much the industry has changed and how many people have their own little piece of Langtrees history. Even though I never got to see the Kalgoorlie location myself, I’d honestly love to visit one day just to soak up the atmosphere, walk down Hay Street, and see what it looks like now. It feels like such a big part of the legacy we all work under today. Thanks for sharing this — it’s always so interesting hearing the real experiences from back then. It makes you appreciate how far Langtrees has come and how many incredible people have been part of its story.”
“‘The building now houses a mining companies offices & staff accommodation’ — What an interesting read and part of our Australian history to consider! Especially because of how inter-related the industry is with mining and the mutually beneficial relationships as a result”
“I love getting to learn about iconic history and the difference it has made in the world today and this particular history is intriguing to me and how it has made a difference leading up to today, thank you for sharing such intriguing facts of the past and your personal experience/memories I appreciate the art of your words! - Georgia Anderson x”
“Club 181 's Scotty "the Sexy Supergran" haha wow! That would’ve been quite the experience i bet! I was watching the documentary ‘The Madam & Company’ and she was featured on there! An absolute character she is, you must had a fun experience ”
“Sounds like an interesting place with an interesting history. It would have been an amazing place to visit. I wonder what the property is worth now if it was $1million in 2019 before all the post covid madness! ”
“The good old days, I had so much fun in Kalgoorlie, and I remember Kalgoorlie with lots of fondness. Seeing the photo of Leigh the day she became a Kalgoorlie Councillor brings tears to my eyes... It's funny how life is, Leigh was the highest voted in as a new member since the council started. Her vote was so high the serving mayor lost his seat that election and always blamed me for it. xxx”
